3.1.1.1 Character Functions

Character functions take one or more character data type as their argument and returns either character or number.

Character functions categories:
  1. Case Conversion functions: LOWER, UPPER, INITCAP
  2. Character manipulation Functions: All character functions except LOWER, UPPER, INITCAP
  3. Character Functions Returning Number Values: ASCII, INSTR, LENGTH
  4. Character Functions Returning Character Values: LOWER, UPPER, INITCAP, CONCAT, SUBSTR, LTRIM, RTRIM, TRIM, LPAD, RDPAD, CHR

Following are the list of in-built functions in Oracle.

FUNCTIONDESCRIPTION
UPPERConverts all characters in an input string to uppercase.
LOWERConverts all characters in an input string to lowercase.
INITCAPConverts the first character in each word in an input string to uppercase and rest all to lowercase.
LENGTHReturns the number of characters (or length) of a specified string.
CONCATConcatenate two strings and returns the combined string.
SUBSTRReturns a substring as specified from the input string.
INSTRSearch for a substring and return the index of the substring in a string.
LTRIMRemoves spaces or other specified characters from input string from the left end.
RTRIMRemoves spaces or other specified characters from input string from the right end.
TRIMRemoves spaces or other specified characters either from the start or end or both sides from the input string.
LPADReturn a string that is left-padded with the specified characters to a certain length.
RPADReturn a string that is right-padded with the specified characters to a certain length.
REPLACEReplace all occurrences of a substring with another substring in the input string.
TRANSALTEReplace all occurrences of characters by other characters in a string.
CHRConverts a numeric value to its corresponding ASCII character.
ASCIIReturns ASCII value for input character.
SOUNDEXReturn a phonetic representation of input string.
